Lookie, lookie!
I've been very full of creative energies and such as of late. Unfortunately, I have also been full of A.D.D.

Because of this, very few of my big crafts I started this break have been finished, but I managed to hunker down and finish this project.

Which project is that, you ask?

So, I went to Wal*Mart the other day, and picked myself up a toy.

I haven't owned a NERF gun in ages. The last NERF toy I had was the crappy Slingshot.

This beaut cost me a whopping 8 bucks. It's a 6-shot revolver. If you pull the trigger without cocking it, the barrel spins. Oh boy oh boy!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
And this is what it's insides look like! ^_^

So, there was one thing I didn't like about the design of the gun. There were 2 little bits of plastic that kept the barrel from falling out all the way, thus keeping me from playing Russian Roulette for Kidz.

...so I removed them.

They used to be in the vicinity of the red circles. Methods of removal included hot knife, nail clipper, pliers, and sandpaper.

What difference does this make, you say?

This difference:

So, although I don't hate the NERF colors, I think that it would look better a little more realistic.

I primed it with flat black Krylon Fusion spraypaint.

Then I drybrushed it with Gold Testor's paint.

And I managed to weasel my face into a few of the pics....

Enjoy, and tell me what you guys think!

I am pretty sure you could outfit an entire Sci-Fi cast with weaponry as long as you have $80 in nerf gear and a decent dry brush technique

I found out that dry brusing is really pretty easy. You should try it! (just remember to sand first!)

Dry brushing has to be the most effective and efficient painting techniques ever.

"Want to bring out some fine details in a model/art peice? Just apply paint to a brush, wipe it off, and madly wave the brush at the art peice in question in a frantic back and forth manner! VIOLA! INSTANT DETAIL!"

If you act now, this technique can be yours for the low, low cost of 3 easy payments of $29.95.

Seriously though, great work, ya'll. You should consider doing Prop manufacturing for movies or TV. Ala Weta Workshops from LotR. I'm sure you've proabably watched their stuff on the special features, if not, then you really should.

Hrmm...do you know how one would go about looking for said kind of job?

To be honest with you, I would have no idea. BUT. I would know where to start, and you're probably already there, considering what you've done so far. I would compile a big list of prop-making companies/movie production/television production studios, even/especially ones abroad (considering your time spent abroad). Join their forums, if they have any. Ask around. Network, network, network. SHOW OFF YOUR STUFF. That's probably the thing that will get you the farthest.

I'd just ask EVERYbody how the hell they got into the business. You could even start with a simple email, once a week until they respond. Weta might be a good start, even though they're thousands of miles away. They're one of the most succesfull prop/set/everything construction companies around.

Oh yeah. Volunteer to help make props/sets for local community plays and productions. Or take classes on it in school. Take pictures and put them into a portfolio. Don't be afraid to send your stuff to places that aren't hiring. That's key in everything I've read.

I don't know. There's some words of advice from me. Hope they help. If I had your talent, that's probably how I'd start.

Awesome, thank you so much.

Prop making isn't my #1 choice for a career, but it most certainly is something I would enjoy spending the rest of my life doing, particularly if my peers think I may have a fighting chance in the industry.

That's pretty impressive. Now the key question is "are you actually going to put it to use, preferabley around the construction of a distasteful drinking game?"

Duh, that's what the Russian Roulette mod is made for! ;)

Load a round and fire at your own head as with russian roulette. If you take a bullet, take 1 drink. If you miss, you can either pass to the next player or "double up".

"Double up"
Choose one other player to be the scapegoat. Without reloading the gun or spinning the chamber, fire the next shot at your head. If you are shot, you must now drink both your drink and the scapegoat's. If you miss, the scapegoat must drink both.

Nope, but I was thinking about getting another one and painting it up like the Samaratin. The only think is I don't know how to paint a realistic wood grain.

At most home improvement stores you can buy a graining tool for painting real looking wood grain with knot holes and everything. It might be too big to use on something that small, though.

Supposedly, the first run of the Mavericks didn't have the 2 tabs. I think they added them because of Russian Roulette related complaints.
